  • Construction of 78km section of highway M6 from Szekszard to Pecs
  • STRABAG leads consortium “Mecsek Autopalya” – Total project volume € 1.048bn

Vienna, 13 November 2007 – STRABAG, the largest construction company in Eastern Europe, won the tender for the construction of the 78km section of the Hungarian highway M6. The Ministry of Economy and Transport awarded a contract worth approximately € 1.048bn to the winner consortium “Mecsek Autopalya”, which is led by STRABAG. STRABAG`s share in the project volume totals € 460m.

The four-lane M6 connects Szekszard with Pecs, the cultural capital of Europe (2010), and is part of the trans-European corridor Vc, which leads from Budapest to Sarajevo. Especially the region Baranya will profit economically from this new connection.

Within this new highway four tunnels, 83 bridge structures (viaducts, underpasses and overpasses) as well as five rest areas will be built. The start of construction is planned for 21 November, the works will be finished presumably by spring 2010.

The project for the construction of the M6 is conducted as a PPP project (Public Private Partnership). The consortium builds the section and operates it within a concession model for 30 years. Therewith STRABAG has highway concessions in five countries.

STRABAG SE`s CEO, Hans Peter Haselsteiner, expresses his delight over the Hungarian major order: “This order is an award by the Hungarian government, which regards us as an important long-term partner – not only with the construction of highways but also as a competent and experienced operator.”
