STRABAG takes over majority of soil and hydraulic engineering specialist

  • Construction firm Möbius employs some 500 people and generates approx. € 150 million in revenue - With Möbius, STRABAG takes a further step towards becoming an all-in-one provider in the field of transport route construction

Vienna, 11 Sept. 2007 – STRABAG today announced it acquired a stake in Josef Möbius Bau AG, based in Hamburg.

The area of expertise of Möbius Bau AG encompasses for the most part heavy earthworking, road, rail and airport construction, the construction of large industrial sites, the construction and maintenance of waterways, and dike construction. In 2006, Möbius generated one quarter of its revenue of € 150 million abroad. Its main markets that year were Sweden, Poland, Lithuania and the Ukraine. Möbius has also developed a great number of construction methods and patents itself, in particular relating to foundation techniques, but also regarding specialty equipment for soil and hydraulic engineering.

“For several years now, STRABAG has consistently pursued the strategy of becoming an all-in-one provider in the field of transport route construction. With the acquisition of Möbius, Germany’s leading hydraulic engineering firm is now a member of the STRABAG family. We will invest strongly in this field in the coming years, as we are convinced that we will see the field grow internationally,” STRABAG CEO Dr. Hans Peter Haselsteiner said today in a statement on the acquisition of the stake in Möbius.

The previous shareholders, the respected Möbius family of Hamburg, will continue to hold a stake in the company. No changes will be made to the management board led by Werner Möbius.

Möbius has entered the partnership with STRABAG in order to expand its market opportunities abroad, especially in Eastern Europe.

The biggest project in Möbius’ company history was the expansion of the Airbus works in Hamburg-Finkenwerder in 2000-2004. Never before had a 160-hectare mudflat been transformed into an industrial area under such difficult subsoil conditions in such a short amount of time.

Möbius is also playing an important role in the consortium to build the large-scale harbour project JadeWeserPort (expected contract volume: approx. € 480 million). A court recently ruled in favour of the consortium of which Möbius is a part.

The enormous global growth in the volume of transported goods brings with it a need to expand harbour and waterway capacities as well as overland transport infrastructures like road and rail. Möbius is a leader in these fields.
