Zürich. 9th March 2007. – STRABAG SE, one of the leading European construction companies, received the tender for the contract section Erstfeld. This is a section of the NEAT (New Railway Alp-Transversal), a new flat roadway through the Alps, which Switzerland will be working on until 2016. The NEAT includes the longest tunnel in the world, the two-lane 57 km Gotthard base tunnel and other tunnels which will enable a significant decrease in driving time through the Swiss Alps and lead to considerable improvements in travel and transport. STRABAG’s comprehensive know-how and extensive experience in the field of tunnel construction were the major criteria for the allocation authority’s decision. STRABAG is all the more pleased about the contract, as it took a two-year legal battle for the company to beat the international competition.
STRABAG will begin construction on Erstfeld in April. Costs will amount to approx. 260 million Euro. The construction section comprises two 7.8 km one-lane tunnels between Erstfeld and Amsteg, 23 connecting galleries (crossways) between the tunnels and a subterranean branch system.
Along with the section Amsteg, on which STRABAG is already working, this makes for a total volume in the NEAT of over 700 million Euro.
