Vienna, 19 May 2008 After buying out minority shareholders, STRABAG SE now holds a substantial package of shares in EFKON AG just below a majority holding. EFKON AG is a leading company in electronic payment systems in the field of transportation and in intelligent traffic control systems. EFKON, based in Graz, Austria, is a globally active company with 700 employees in 17 countries and is active in all ITS segments including electronic tolling, traffic control, guidance and monitoring systems and transport telematics.
The company’s most important areas are global sales as well as research and development, and EFKON is a global market and technology leader in a number of segments. Today, EFKON’s products and systems are used in more than 20,000 km of motorway every day and EFKON can point to reference projects in more than 40 countries. Among other things, EFKON is one of the main suppliers for the world’s most state-of-theart electronic toll system at this time, Germany’s truck tolling system. EFKON’s most famous project in Austria involves the Section Control facilities. In 2007, Austria’s ASFINAG awarded EFKON the contract for up to 500,000 go-boxes for the country’s truck tolling system. EFKON is currently pursuing over 400 ITS projects with a total potential of € 4 billion.
The constant modernisation and expansion of road infrastructures results in a parallel rise in demand for electronic pay, control and monitoring systems. The stake in EFKON allows STRABAG to become a one-stop shop for infrastructure facilities. With STRABAG’s support, EFKON is to grow to become the world’s leading ITS group. In 2007, EFKON generated revenues of about € 70 million.
STRABAG SE CEO Hans Peter Haselsteiner sees great potential in this segment for STRABAG: “The investment in EFKON allows us to position ourselves as a one-stop provider – from conception and implementation all the way to operation – of state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities and toll systems. This gives us a significant competitive advantage. Particularly positive in this context is the fact that the previous management team, co-founders and EFKON management board members Dr. Helmut Rieder and Dr. Raimund Pammer, will stay on to provide their extensive expertise for the long term.”
