Vienna, 24 January 2008 – STRABAG, the leading construction group in Central and Eastern Europe, has been awarded the distinction of European PPP Deal of the Year by industry journal Project Finance International (PFI) for the financing of the construction of the M6 motorway between Szekszárd and Pécs in Hungary.
PFI praised the STRABAG-led consortium Mecsek Autópálya for securing the financing of over € 1 billion in record time. The financial closing took place within eight weeks of submission and just nine days after acceptance of the tender.
The four-lane M6 motorway links Szekszárd with Pécs, the European Capital of Culture 2010, and forms part of the Pan-European Corridor Vc between Budapest and Sarajevo. The project comprises the building of 78 km of motorway and four tunnels and is being carried out as a PPP (Public Private Partnership) project. Under the PPP scheme, the consortium builds the section of motorway and operates it on a concession basis for a period of 30 years. With the project, STRABAG holds motorway concessions in five countries.
