Construction of a flood protection dam for € 92 million in Oman

The publicly listed construction group STRABAG SE has been very successful internationally in the past few months, as four new contracts have increased the order backlog by more than € 230 million. “This year, we have already landed contracts from the Arabian Peninsula to Thailand. We are active outside of our European core markets when there is demand for our know-how as a technology company in the construction sector,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE, explaining the strategy.
Oman’s Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources awarded STRABAG Oman LLC the contract to build a flood protection dam near the city of Sur. The order value amounts to € 92 million. In addition to the construction of a 1.2 km earth dam, the project also comprises considerable earthworks and erosion protection works in the drainage of the Wadi Canal as well as the rerouting of 5 km of an existing rural road. Construction is scheduled for completion by August 2016.
Also in Oman, the Ministry of Transport and Communication awarded to STRABAG Oman LLC the contract to expand and upgrade the road between Wadi Minqal and Wadi Bani Jaber. The planned asphalt road will be 19 km long and will be built for around € 28 million. A total of 2 million m3 of earth will have to be moved during the 24 months of construction.
In Thailand, STRABAG has been commissioned to produce and deliver 1.73 million concrete sleepers within five years for installation at three railway construction projects. A sleeper factory will be built north of Bangkok within the coming year specifically for the € 88 million project.
In Brunei, Japanese plant manufacturer Toyo Kanetsu K.K. has commissioned STRABAG International GmbH to plan and build a concrete outer tank for the interim storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The tank, measuring 76 m in diameter and 46 m in height, will be able to store up to 120,000 m³ of natural gas at -162°C starting in mid 2015.
