Motorway M6 and M60, Hungary

On 31 March 2010, following the successful on-time completion of construction works, the opening celebrations were held for the 80 km motorway section M6 from Szekszárd to Bóly and M60 from Bóly to Pécs.

The project was awarded to the STRABAG/Colas/Laing/Intertoll Consortium as a concession project in November 2007. STRABAG AG and Colas SA jointly assumed the function of general contractor, whereby STRABAG, with a 60 % share of the construction, assumed the leading role. The construction volume of the entire project amounted to € 855 million.

The contract comprised planning and construction as well as operation and maintenance of the motorway for a period of 30 years. Despite the exceptionally short construction time from November 2007 to March 2010 (29 months), this motorway section was able to be opened to traffic on time. This order was the longest section of the M6 motorway and included many different construction elements, all of which were successfully completed within the very short construction time.

The project involved the construction of a total of 80 km of motorway with approx. 12 million m³ of earthworks, nine large bridges (viaducts), 87 overpasses und underpasses and two motorway maintenance facilities including a police station and two motorway rest stops. Also built were four tunnels (two bores each) with a total length of 2 x 3 km through the Mecsek mountain range. It is worth noting that these are the first motorway tunnels ever to be built in Hungary.
