Around 37% of global carbon emissions come from buildings, with two-thirds generated during operation. Renovating the existing – and in many places outdated – building stock is therefore one of the most effective levers for meeting Europe’s climate targets. To achieve this, the renovation rate will need to at least double by 2030. As a vertically integrated construction company, STRABAG looks beyond the actual construction process. What is needed are comprehensive solutions that take into account the entire life cycle of a building.

Political and economic conditions are evolving dynamically. Under the Green Deal, the European Union is providing over € 400 billion by 2027. For energy-efficient refurbishments – such as installing intelligent HVAC or sanitary systems to reduce emissions – subsidies of up to 60% are available. Increasingly, national programmes are also being introduced to accelerate the decarbonisation of buildings.

Energy-efficient refurbishments also make economic sense. Without them, operating costs rise – putting a burden on both owners and tenants. Modernisation not only protects the climate, it also safeguards affordable housing in the long term and increases property value.
