Powering systems for climate resilience.

Europe faces a decisive challenge – and at the same time a historic opportunity. As the continent charts a course towards climate neutrality by 2050, its infrastructure is reaching its limits. Even today, almost a quarter of drinking water seeps away through leaking pipes long before it reaches the tap. At the same time, thirst for energy is growing: The electrification of industry, mobility and everyday life is driving up electricity consumption. Yet the networks that are meant to carry this transformation are often at their limits – outdated, insufficiently developed or simply not yet in place.
This, however, represents an enormous opportunity for transformation. The energy transition offers the chance to fundamentally renew Europe’s infrastructure. If Europe is to manage this change successfully, the modernisation and expansion of its energy and water infrastructure will be essential – from smart grids and efficient storage systems to technologies that reliably deliver energy and water even under extreme conditions.
To advance the energy transition, European institutions and national governments are putting the necessary framework in place. By 2030, over one trillion euros are to be invested in networks, infrastructure and climate-friendly technologies, supported by measures such as REPowerEU and the EU’s Net Zero Industry Act.
