Why do we need to unseal and green areas?
Unsealed surfaces are key to sustainable urban development: they enable rainwater to seep away naturally, reduce the risk of flooding and help to cool urban areas.
- Flood protection: Unsealed surfaces and infiltration-capable soil structure - e.g. through paving or substrate slabs. These allow rainwater to seep away more quickly and reduce the risk of flooding.
- Cooling during heat waves: Green areas reduce the ambient temperature and transform parking lots or city squares into cooler places.
- Better air quality: Plants such as trees and shrubs improve air quality through photosynthesis.

Promenadenring St. Pölten
Project period: Spring 2025 – Autumn 2026
Location: St. Pölten
A green belt for the city centre: The Promenadenring in St. Pölten is being transformed into a climate-resilient open space. Sealed surfaces covering around 20,000 m² will be broken up, over 100 new trees will be planted and a sponge city system will be added to reduce heat islands. The project will be complemented by new seating and meeting areas, safe cycle paths and footpaths, and sustainable rainwater management.
Julius Tandler Square
Project period: April – December 2025
Location: Vienna
A place undergoing change: At the end of 2025, a modern, green and inclusive city square was created around Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof. Around 6,800 m² of space was unsealed on 9,000 m², 46 new trees were planted, and a sponge city was integrated to supply the trees – for better air, cooler temperatures and a better quality of life in the heart of Vienna.
